This year, we are excited to offer a bright pink shirt for our Running Scared design. It’s gonna be awesome! However, we are only offering long sleeve shirts for the 5k. We will sell you a short sleeve shirt with the Kids Fun Run design if you want a short sleeve shirt. The skeleton holds a water bottle instead of a beer mug on the Kids Fun Run shirts.
Registration will open online at GetMeRegistered.com on July 1st. You will have a short window of opportunity to register early and save some money before July 15th. We won’t be at the Convention Center on Saturday to remind you of our race this year on Oct. 8th, but we will be there in Spirit! So mark your calendars for the second Saturday in October for the Running Scared 5k 2016! We are working on our newest logo which has a surprise in store for you! The 8th Annual Running Scared 5k and Kids Fun Run was another success. If you have ever worn your Running Scared shirt out and had someone approach you to talk about our race, you will know that other’s think so too. I have only heard positive things about our 5k and the Kids Fun Run. “It’s one of my favorite races!” “I love how it’s such a great community event.” “It’s so much fun!” “I love the party after the race. There’s so much food!” “The Kids Fun Run is great for the children. I love the dance team performance!”
Those are just a few things I have heard people say. We were fortunate again with perfect weather. Then, there was the generous donation from Ooh La La and the Greasers. They donated their time and talents to be this year’s entertainment at the Post Race Party. Since Ooh La La has been playing the Cincinnati area for 40 years, this was their Give Back Farewell Performance. They drew a big fan base to come and rock the night away in our Beer Garden outside of Haffey Fieldhouse.
If you want to measure the race’s success in monetary value, we feel like God blessed us again with very generous donors. At the time of the writing of this article, all of the money had not been tallied from the day of the event and bills are still being paid, but just from the sponsors and online registration, we raised $40,000.
We did have one unexpected expense this year. As you may have noticed each year our race path is marked off with those orange safety cones at every crossroad and intersection along with the people we have working to ensure our participant’s safety. These cones are always supplied by First Star Safety and set up along the route by Adleta Construction. Both of these are done at no cost to the race, as they are donated by In Kind sponsors. This year, before the cones could be recollected after the race, they were stolen.
Since 150 cones, valued at $14.50 each would have taken a huge chunk of money from the children, to replace the stolen cones, we were blessed by the grace of God that the thief returned all but 17 of the cones. An anonymous call came in a few days after the race saying where cones could be found. Our treasurer only had to reimburse First Star Safety for $246.50.
Other than some finishers’ mugs still needing to get to the top 50 men and top 50 women finishers, this year’s race is now history. We want to thank all of our sponsors and all of our volunteers. We could not make this event successful without your support and your help. It takes a lot of time and effort to make this event work. It’s like a small festival that only lasts for one day. The children appreciate everything that you sacrifice for them. And that is what the 5k and Kids Fun Run is all about…the children. So I would say, it was another huge success.
Race Day begins with the Kids Fun Run at 1:00. If you still want your child to participate in the Fun Run, come early, pay your $5 and join in on the fun. Children will walk over to the Cemetery as a group. They will run the short, flat, route and walk back together to Haffey Fieldhouse where the Halloween fest will take place. Children will eat, drink, be entertained by the SPPA Dance Team, watch a magic show, have the opportunity to get their face painted and take a hayride. All of this for only $5. The Kids Fun Run party is over at 2:30.
Then we start clean-up and set up for the 5k. The Race Day Registration will be open at the Reading Veteran’s Memorial Stadium from 4:00-5:45. You may still register for $35. If there are still extra shirts available, you may also buy a long or short sleeve shirt. The roads will close a little before 6pm, so arrive early or plan to park off the route and walk to the stadium. After the 5k, everyone heads back to the Haffey Fieldhouse for the Post Race Party. We will have food from our wonderful sponsors: El Pueblo, Sammy’s Gourmet Burgers, Penn Station, LaRosa’s, Little Ceasar’s, The John Morrell Love Van, JTM, Husman’s, UDF, McDonald’s, Reinhart and our Chili Booth. The Beer Garden will be serving up Sam Adams, Christian Moerlein and Budweiser. Pop and water available. The band, Ooh La La and the Greasers, will be rocking the place until 10pm. Party is included with your 5k registration or if you only want to enjoy the party, tickets are $20 each at the door.
The fun doesn’t end there, Split the Pot, Basket Raffles, Silent Auction and Costume Contest also happen inside of Haffey Fieldhouse. So be prepared to enjoy a great event to help raise money for Youth Education! Bring all of your friends to share a great night!
Registration online at https://secure.getmeregistered.com/RunningScared5k closes for the Running Scared 5k on Wednesday, Oct. 7th, however, there is always Late Registration and Day of the Event Registration if you missed it.
The Race is Sat., Oct. 10th at 6pm. We have packet pick up on Friday, Oct. 9th from noon until 6pm at Haffey Fieldhouse, 1599 West Street, Reading, Ohio 45215. You will also be able to sign up for Late Registration on Friday for $30.
Day of the Event Registration for $35, is Sat., Oct. 10th from 4:00-5:45pm at Reading Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, 1600 West Street, Reading, Ohio 45215. The race starts at 6pm. Get your costume on, grab your friends and come join us for a memorable night of fun. Party directly after the race until 10pm. Food, Beer Garden, Live Music from Ooh La La and the Greasers – all included with your race registration price!
For those of you unfamiliar with the Route, here is a map. Remember if you park inside the Haffey Fieldhouse lot, you will NOT be able to leave until the last runner has finished the race. There is street parking available on Market Street, Pleasant Street and North Street, then walk over to the Stadium and Fieldhouse. See map below.
The Course is flat, out and back. Finish on the track inside the Reading Veteran’s Memorial Stadium, then head over across the parking lot to the Post Race Party. This is gonna be a great evening so tell all of your friends and family to join us. Don’t feel like doing the 5k? Just come to the party instead. Tickets are $20 and the money raised goes to Youth Education. Register today before the price goes up!
Did you get a team together to walk “In Memory of” or “In Honor of” someone? What better way to remember or honor a loved one than to help give children a great education? When you come to pick up your bib number, you will be asked if you are walking for someone. You can sign their name on the poster at that time and we will announce the names before the 5k begins.
Do you have your costume yet? Yes, we encourage costumes. It makes the whole evening more fun. We have a costume contest and award prizes at the Post Race Party at 8pm. So stick around if you have a great costume and see if you win!
